To SEO or not to SEO that is the question

If websites are properly designed search engines can more easily match search requests with accurate results, this ensures that the searcher finds what they are looking for and the search engine retains a good reputation. People that go to the trouble of ensuring that they comply with standards or best practice should find more of their content indexed and therefore stand a better chance of naturally matching their website content with search enquiries.
There is nothing worse than to surf the Internet and come across outdated and irrelevant content and a website that is poorly maintained and difficult to navigate. Of course the flip side of the coin is true as well, when sites are over optimized for machines and not for people, it is just as bad. Although I have personally found that once people become aware of SEO and search engine optimization the same stages happen over and over again:
They completely over react and over optimise their websites
Then they install Google analytics or something similiar and suddenly realise: OMG normal people are not clicking where they are supposed to
In between they have obtained links from every Tom Dick and Johnny, in some of the worst neighborhoods on the Internet, not realising that search engines also have content categories even for porn and spam...
Then only when nothing that they seemed to have 'figured out' does not seem to work anymore, they start cleaning up their websites, targeting people again instead of machines, and WOW back in the SERPS, search engines are complex, hey?
Actually it is quite simple, original content, content and content and do not design websites for machines but for people, search engine designers are an even more advanced species than rocket scientists and they know it all...
