To exchange Links or Not to exchange links that is the question

Seeing as I and my clients, are receiving a few thousand requests for link exchanges I think it is time that someone writes something about this very basic question that everyone assumes everyone else knows.
Should I just exchange links with another page?
NO.
That said, there are certain conditions under which you could exchange links with another page, if you are a vet and you want to link to a manufacturer of dog food with special nutritional supplements, that will be a good link exchange as the surfer would be able to see what the vet considers good nutrition for the surfers doggie. If the dog food manufacturer then links back to the vet, that would be great as well. these type of reciprocal link exchanges are not worth all that much in terms of organic search engine value however and NATURAL one way inbound linking is still king.
Regarding the black SEO (EVIL) three way, four way or lateral link exchanges that certain people negotiate: This is evil and even if the search engines do not catch you now there may very well come a day when they do and I hope they ban your page for many many months. Do not do this, this type of link building is not ethical and definately not natural.
So just to recap: Do not exchange links with a shampoo company if you sell porcelain cups. 95 percent of all link exchange requests at the moment are from completely unrelated pages. Why would someone coming to your web page about dog grooming be interested in an international calling card?
